Speed Cameras Finally Approved in Palm Bay School Zones
The city of Palm Bay has given the final go-ahead to install speed cameras in its school zones. On Thursday night, the Palm Bay city commissioners unanimously voted in favor of the cameras, which are designed to spot anyone going at least 10 mph above the speed limit and to have any findings reviewed by a traffic enforcement officer. Drivers caught above the speed limit in school zones will be sent a $100 ticket in the mail.
Mayor Rob Medina expressed agreement with the measure, stating that it provides an additional tool for law enforcement investigations. The ordinance also allows for local hearings for individuals who wish to challenge any violations that they receive, along with a public announcement and awareness campaign at least 30 days before enforcing the system.
Before the speed cameras can go into effect, the city must pick a company to supply the cameras. Other areas such as Osceola County and Eustis have already approved similar systems.
